Pakistan cricket team star Babar Azam stepped down as the white-ball skipper for the second time within a year on Tuesday. As per a report, one of the main reason for the batter to take the step was because he was disconnected with his teammates. The clamour over the call to replace Babar as the side’s T20I skipper grew louder following Pakistan’s exit from the T20 World Cup in the group stage of the tournament.
Why did Babar Azam resign as Pakistan captain?
As per Cricket Pakistan, Babar Azam felt increasingly disconnected with his teammates following the T20 World Cup, forcing him to take the decision to step down as skipper. Additionally, the star batter also reportedly felt undervalued with the team. It is pertinent to point out that Babar was reinstated as the skipper just before the T20 WC after having stepped down from the role in 2023 after the ODI World Cup.

The report further claims that Mohammed Rizwan is most likely to be named the next skipper. The PCB has already commenced talks with the keeper-batter over the matter. The report further claims that Gary Kirsten wanted Babar Azam to continue as the ODI skipper while wanting a new skipper for T20Is alone following Pakistan’s miserable campaign at the World Cup. However, Babar Azam reportedly denied the offer.
Babar Azam resigns once again
Babar Azam took to social media platform X to explain the rationale behind stepping down as skipper. He claimed that the burden of captaincy added to a significant change in his workload and expressed his interest to focus on his batting and form instead. Additionally, he said that the move was aimed at ensuring his personal growth while he vowed to continue contributing for the team across all formats of the game.
