It is not easy to track down the records of India all-rounder R Ashwin. Every time he turns up for the team in whites, he creates/smashes a slew of records, and the IND vs BAN 1st Test in Chennai was no different. Not only he took six wickets in the second innings to take India to a win, but played a crucial knock in the first, to get to his sixth Test century and hand the team, the advantage.
2nd Highest Wicket-taker for India
On Sunday, Ashwin surpassed West Indies legend Courtney Walsh’s Test record of 519 wickets. The Indian all-rounder has 522 in his kitty now, and is eighth overall in that list. Moreover, he is the second-highest wicket-taker in the country after Anil Kumble, 619 scalps. What is interesting is, his wickets have come at a strike rate of 50.7, the second best in the top-10 list, after Dale Steyn.
Most Fifers for India
R Ashwin extended his record for most fifers by an India in Tests. While Kumble has 35, Ashwin has 37 now. This is also the joint-second highest in the world with Shane Warne. Only Muttiah Muralidaran has more, 67. But Ashwin got his 37 fifers in 101 Tests, while Warne got there in 145. The next on the list is Richard Hadlee with 36 in 86 Tests.
Most 10-wicket Hauls for India
No surprises there. Kumble and Ashwin have the most 10-wicket hauls for India in Tests — 8. Even though Ashwin did not get one in the IND vs BAN Test, but it is still one record, that seems to be getting broken soon, at the pace at which the spinner is going.
Second-most 100s for Batsman at No. 8 or Below
A true all-rounder, Ashwin got to his sixth ton in Tests. That means, he has four tons at no. 8 or below, which is the second most in the world. Only New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori has more — 5. Also in the list is Jason Holder, who has three tons to his name. If that is not enough, Ashwin is the only player in the world to have 30 fifers, and 20 scores of above 50.
